Inspired by a childhood teddy bear given to her by her grandmother, Jane has written and illustrated more than 20 picture books featuring Old Bear. Jane continued to nurture her passion through adulthood and studied illustration and design, later becoming an Art teacher and settling down with her husband Ivan and their 3 children Owen, Alison & Ralph. When she wasn’t doing this she would spend days at a time sitting in her favorite tree, reading the likes of Arthur Ransome and Enid Blyton.
Her holidays were spent wandering fields and lanes, conjuring up fantastical worlds with pencil and sketchbook. First published in 1986, it later became the inspiration for BAFTA award winning TV series Old Bear Stories.Īs a child growing up in Norfolk, Jane developed a love for writing and drawing. In 1986 her Old Bear was published, and made it into Booklist's "Editor's Choice" list for children's books for that year in an earlier starred review, Barbara Elleman praised Hissey's use of perspective, texture, and colors.Recognized in both publishing and TV, Jane Hissey is best known for her children’s book series Old Bear & Friends. He was later joined by other soft toy characters. During her childhood he was a main focus of her games, and when she was an adult he provided the inspiration for her first illustrated book. Hissey has written that "Old Bear" was given to her as a baby by her grandmother. They have three children, Owen, Alison and Ralph. Hissey and her husband Ivan live in East Sussex. She taught Art at a sixth form college until the birth of her first child. She studied Design and Illustration at Brighton. Hissey was born in Norwich and attended Norwich High School for Girls. She is best known for her series of children's books Old Bear and Friends, which became the basis for a BAFTA award-winning television series Old Bear Stories, episodes of which were released on VHS by Carlton Video.
